DIY Geometric Wood Panel Wall Art

Our entry way was in need of an update. I adored the gold sunburst mirror I made for the space, but like almost every other area in the house, I had the itch to redo it.

I liked the idea of hanging the artwork that sat on the narrow foyer table but felt that I needed one larger art piece to be the focal point.  That’s where this geometric wall art comes in! Using some of my favorite supplies I had on hand I was able to take a plain wood panel and make custom art for the space that coordinates with the other art work oh-so-perfectly.

Time: 45 minutes + drying time
Supplies: wood panel / foam brush/ wood stain / painter’s tape / double-sided tape / craft paint / brush / geometric template

(I used Martha Stewart Craft paints in metallic gold, wedding cake, love bird, and wet cement)

Step 1: Use a foam brush to apply the wood stain to the wood panel. Paint in the direction of the wood grain.

Step 2: Use a paper towel to wipe off the excess stain. If you want a darker, richer color, allow the paint to soak into the wood board for a few minutes. Allow it to dry completely, about 1 hour.

Step 3: Print and cut out the geometric tile template and arrange them on the wood panel how you want them. Once they are in place, temporarily adhere them to the wood panel using the double-sided tape.

Step 4: Apply painter’s tape around the hexagons to create your stencils. Use your fingers to press down the tape and remove any bubbles.

Step 5: Paint each geometric shape. Make sure to paint away from the edges of the tape to minimize the paint bleeding through. Apply 2-3 coats, or until the paint looks nice and solid. Once you’ve applied the last coat, carefully remove the tape before the paint drys. This prevents the paint from sticking to the edges of the tape and peeling up when you remove it.
