I’m so excited to share a fun and festive beginner sewing tutorial with you today! I was thinking about creating something for New Year’s that wasn’t just a sparkly headband—although I do love those (and have created one in the past).
I wanted to create simple New Years decor that could possibly live a bit longer than just one night. That’s how I came up with the idea to sew a sparkly number banner. This banner can be displayed for a party but can also be displayed all January long. And since each number is created individually, you only need to make one new digit to use it the following year.

New Year’s was on my mind when I created this banner but you can customize it in different colors for birthdays too! I’ve created a free sewing pattern for all digits 0-9 so you can customize this banner for your own festivities.

New Year’s Number Banner
Supplies
Free printable number and star pattern
Stiff felt sheets (black)
Glitter foam or canvas sheets (gold)
Glitter foam or canvas sheets (silver)
Star sewing labels (one per number)
Gold cord
Tools
Sewing machine
Matching thread
Pins
Scissors
Pinking shears (I used my LDH scalloped pinking shears)
Chalk pen or chalk liner

Step 1 – Print and cut pattern
Download and print the free number sewing pattern. Only print the pages of the numbers you need plus the star page.
Follow the solid lines and cut out each number and star pattern.

Step 2 – cut materials
Place the number patterns face down on the stiff felt. Use a chalk pencil or chalk liner to trace the number shape. Cut out the felt numbers using pinking shears.
After cutting out the felt, cut the same number patterns again, this time cutting along the dotted lines. Place the now smaller number templates face down on the back side of the gold glitter sheet. Cut out using regular scissors.
Use straight pins to pin the gold numbers onto the felt.

Step 3 – sew glitter sheet on felt
Using a golden yellow thread, sew all the way around the gold number, backstitching at the beginning and end. Use a 1/8″-1/4″ seam allowance to sew close to the outside edge of the number. Pivot along the curves and corners as needed.
Repeat with the other numbers.

Step 4 – add stars
Use the star pattern to cut out one silver star shape for each number. Pin one star on top of each number. Sew along the edges using a light gray thread. Backstitch and the beginning and end of your sewing.

Step 5 – sew hanging loops
To create a hanging loop, place one small sewing label, like our metallic star labels on the center top of each number. Make sure the folded edge is on the top. Pin in place.
Use black thread to sew the label in place. Repeat this step with the other numbers.
Thread the numbers onto a metallic cord. Now your banner is ready to be displayed!
