My Thoughts on Turning 30

Blogger Sarah Hearts shares her thoughts on turning 30 and what she's learned in the past decade.

Today is my 30th birthday!

And while I know many people aren’t looking forward to getting older, I feel really excited to be entering this next decade in my life. So today I thought it would be fun to share my thoughts on turning 30 and some of the things I’ve learned in my twenties that I wish I could have told myself a decade ago.

Blogger Sarah Hearts shares her thoughts on turning 30 and what she's learned in the past decade.

What I’ve learned in my twenties

in no particular order

Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Seriously. This is a constant process for me as I’ve always been one who is afraid to fail. At anything. But I’m learning to be ok with my flaws.

Suck it up and learn to ride a bike.

I didn’t learn until we moved to L.A. and it’s been hands down one of my favorite things I’ve ever done. I now bike just about everywhere around town and I can’t believe I didn’t learn to ride sooner.

Life is too short to have boring hair.

I’ve had pink hair in my early and late twenties and now I’m kicking off my thirties with my newly purple hair. It’s only hair and if you don’t like it, it will grow out or you can change it.

Only buy things that bring you joy.

This one comes straight from this book, though it’s something I’ve come to learn over the years before I read it. After way too many impulse buys on things that I later took to Goodwill, I’ve tried to only invest in things that bring me joy. This sometimes mean waiting to buy the brand that is way more expensive, but in the end, I use and it enjoy it so much more.

Learn what style flatters your figure.

This one took me awhile to learn even though it sounds pretty obvious.  Now I rock fit and flare dresses all the time. Also don’t try to be a certain style or fit into a certain label. Just wear whatever you love.

Horses are still my favorite.

After my last big fall when I was 20 I broke my pelvis and was a bit rattled and nervous to ride to say the least. I went through a season where I thought I didn’t want to ride and almost felt guilty for being uninterested. But that was a season and I love horseback riding more than ever and I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to continue that. It’s something I hope I continue my entire life.

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

I’ve always been a planner and when things don’t go according to plan I freak out. Big time. I’m leaning to be more adaptable and go with the flow (and God’s plan).

Travel.

And travel some more. See as much of this beautiful world as you can, even if that means taking a short road trip in your state. And save up for those big trips too because going to other countries is rad.

Find your perfect lipstick color.

And rock it—even if you’re just biking to the grocery store. Mine is Bare Minerals Never Say Never.

Take care of your body.

After over a decade of chronic foot pain, I’ve learned this one the hard way. Listen to your body and do what it needs. Also wear sunscreen (the spray stuff is best) way more often and always wear gloves when washing dishes.

Thanks so much for celebrating with me today and for all your support! I hope this year is going to be a great one for me, Sarah Hearts, and for YOU! Who knows, maybe I’ll be sharing a post just like this in 10 years?

Happy Birthday! 30s kick 20s in the butt. I lived it up in my 20s, but my 30s are way better for a variety of reasons. I’ll be 40 in January . . . which I was scared of . . . but then every woman has said 40s are even better than 30s. So I’m kind of looking forward to it now!
