Gold Leaf Square Boxwood Wreath

Update a traditional boxwood wreath with gold leaf wooden circles for a festive look that works for all holidays.

Gold Leaf Square Boxwood Wreath

In last week’s DIY glitter feather garland post I shared a peak at my boxwood wreath. So today I wanted to show a few more details of the wreath and explain what materials I used to create this simple wreath. I’ve never purchased a boxwood wreath before and I just love how festive they look.

When decorating this wreath I wanted to add something that would be subtle so I could have the wreath displayed from fall until New Years. Since the holidays pop up so quickly, I’m all about decor that’s “in season” for more than just a couple weeks.

I purchased some flat wooden circles and painted them with a coat of white craft paint. Once they were dry, I covered parts of the circles with washi tape to mask off one side. I painted a thin coat of gold leaf sizing on one side, waiting about 15 minutes for it to dry, then added some gold leafing. Gold leaf can be a tricky thing. I learned a few tips (and what not to do) when I made a gold leaf light switch plate.

  1. this is the greatest wreath! i love the unexpected shape, and the circles you chose add a nice touch – combining circles and the square shape :)
